The Instituto Cervantes, the official Spanish Government Centre, is a public institution founded in 1991 to promote Spanish language teaching and knowledge of the cultures of Spanish speaking countries throughout the world. It is the largest worldwide Spanish teaching organization and has 40 branches in five continents.
Objectives and functions:
To orginise general and special Spanish courses, as well as the co-official languages in Spain.
To issue on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) and to organize the dates of the exams.
Update the teaching methods and teacher training.
To support the work of Hispanists.
To participate en programmes to promote the knowledge of the Spanish language.
To carry out the spread of the Spanish culture, in collaboration with other Spanish and Hispanic-American institutions and with institutions of other orginizing countries.
To offer the use of public libraries equiped with the latest technologies.
Orginizing institutions:
The Trust. Organisation that manages the activities of the Instituto.
The Presidency of Honour corresponds to His Magesty the King of Spain.
The Executive Presidency is carried out by the President of the Spanish Government.
The elected members have been designated amongst well-known representatives of the Spanish and Hispanic-American literature and culture, of the Royal Academies, universities and other social institutions. There are natural members the awarded writers with the Literature Prize Miguel de Cervantes (Cervantes Prize).
Board of Directors. Organism that aproves the general plans of the Institute.
It is composed of representatives of the Ministeries of Foreign Affairs, Education and Science, Culture and Finance, as well as the Trust.
Director. Post that corresponds the managing and representation of the Instituto.
